Newsletter September 23, 2019

Dear Family,                                                                                         September 23, 2019
What an exciting week we will have! Check out LSC’s Facebook page and Instagram for each day’s theme. Congratulations to Bailyn Brooks and John Collin McWhorter! They are our homecoming representatives.
We will have our weekly reading and spelling tests Thursday of this week. I sent the Home Connection letter home Friday so you could get a jump start.
If your child misses school, they must bring an excuse to school the next day. We’ve been a little remiss on this.
Congratulations to Harper! Her name was drawn from those meeting their goal of 60 minutes reading at home. She won a whole dollar!
The Barbour County Humane Society and Southern Souls Animal League are our charities for homecoming. Please remember to send a jar of peanut butter before Friday.
We dismiss Friday at 12:00. No extended day, no lunch.
Our newsletter will be located on our third grade blog. This will be helpful if yours is misplaced or if other grownups in your child’s family need access. Go to Lakesidechiefs.net. Then “About”. Then “Faculty/Staff”. Scroll down to find my name. Eventually, you will see a place to click for our blog.
We are loving cursive writing. Our classwork comes home every day. Please guide and support your child as needed.
            Thank you to:
·        “Aunt Bec-Bec” (Becky McPherson) for watching our class Thursday afternoon.
·        Ella’s mom, Gina, for delicious birthday cupcakes and snack bags.
·        Porter’s mom, Julie, and Aunt Amy for purchasing a class set of blue and white shakers for us to use at pep rallies.
·        Katelyn’s mom, Michelle, for sharing a great free app to help with memorizing math facts. MATH DRILLS LITE can be programmed for the specific skill you wish your child to master. It. Works.
Loving and Teaching Yours,   Suzann Tibbs

Dear Family,                                                                      September 16, 2019
School pictures are this Wednesday! Students wear uniforms. We WILL have our pictures made before PE so we won’t be red-faced and sweaty.
Last day for homecoming shirt orders is tomorrow. You’ll also find an order form for Breast Cancer Awareness pink t-shirt.
We are working on common and proper nouns. You can work on this as you ride down the street! Talk about things you see as a common noun (restaurant) and what the proper noun would be (Burger King). You can think of tons!
In science, we are continuing life cycles and living versus non-living things.  Great work on our weather related science test!!
Our story this week is Bummer and Lazarus. It’s a great one!
            Thank you and hugs to:
·        Porter for our homemade cookies
·        “Miss” Gina Nixon for watching our class a few minutes Tuesday morning
·        Logan for picking up pinecones every single day from where we land if we play on the slide

Teaching and Loving yours,
            Miss Suzann

Dear Family,                                                                      September 9, 2019
I hope you’ve had time to log in to Open Court Reading (to find our story and other skills we are covering), Accelerated Reader (to view your child’s progress in AR), and iNOW (to view your child’s attendance and grades). If you have trouble with any of these, please let me know.
Lakeside collects Box Tops for Education. You may send these in any time. We also recycle ink cartridges and receive a small amount of money for each we mail in. Send these in a plastic sandwich bag so the ink won’t get on things in your child’s bookbag.
Charleston Wrap orders are due tomorrow. Other upcoming dates: School pictures are on September 18. Scholastic Book Club orders are due September 25.
Our Pom Pom girls did a great job Friday! I was so proud of them! This Friday will wear decade attire. Select your favorite decade. I have many from which to choose. Hahaha!
I read our test on Little Havana aloud to the class. We will continue our study of nouns and verbs. Remember we aren’t following Open Courts’ English skills progression. It’s a tad too difficult too quickly in my opinion. You may notice on our reading tests that a couple of pages were skipped.
WOW! I can tell we have been working on simple addition and subtraction facts! Our scores are improving daily.  Let your child show you how he/she can count money. We’ve used dimes, nickels, and pennies.
In science, we took a break from life cycles to take advantage of all the news reports on Hurricane Dorian.  Ask your child some of the things we’ve discussed to reduce the impact of weather-related hazards. We will continue learning about living vs non-living things and life cycles.
Thank you to Edyn for our yummy donuts last week!
                                      Loving and Teaching Yours,
                                                           Miss Suzann
