October 28, 2019

Dear Family,                                                                                              October 28, 2019
I was so proud of our report card grades last week! I hope you noticed the new AR reading levels from our STAR testing. You might’ve traveled in a stratus cloud this morning. You may call it fog but we are scientists and say stratus!
In math this week, we will study adding two-digit numbers using mental computation; naming line segments; equilateral triangle (all sides are the same length), isosceles triangle (two sides are the same length), and scalene triangle (all sides are different lengths); identifying a missing digit in addition; and…..drum roll… multiplying by 1 and by 10, factor and product. Don’t stop practicing addition facts! Saxon includes them on tests throughout the year.
Our story is Get the Facts. We will talk about homographs: words spelled the same way but pronounced differently depending on their use in a sentence. I am elated we are reading so well! And more importantly, comprehending!!
Congratulations to Katelyn, John Collin, Harper, Mason, Ella, and Daryn for meeting their AR goals the first nine weeks!
We’ve been BOO-ED! Thank you, Miss Mindy! We shall have fun eating all that candy!
Third grade has been asked to sing at LSC’s Veterans Day program Friday, November 8, at 8:15am on the football field. We will sing “This Land Is Your Land”.  I’m sending home the words. Please practice!
This is Red Ribbon Week. Tomorrow is crazy socks, Thursday is LSC attire or a costume (no masks), and Friday is Hippy Day!
Please allow your child to be responsible for his/her binder. They know what to leave at home, what to return to school, and what stays in the binder.
My “Lakeside Ladies” need to review the dress code on page 28-29 of our handbook. You may locate it online if you’ve misplaced yours. The length of skorts, skirts, dresses, and jumpers must be 3 inches above the knee or longer. I’m not so crazy to measure and if it’s 4 inches punish anyone but some of ours are way above three inches.
Loving and Teaching Yours, Miss Suzann

October 21, 2019

Dear Family,                                                                                             October 21, 2019
Thank you for your support of our Fall Festival! A fun time was had by all. If you’re sending money to pay for class pictures…it’s due tomorrow.
Congratulations to John Collin! His name was drawn from completed Reading Charts. He won $1. Remember to fill these out each week. They are in our binders. There is a letter from our music teacher, Janice Adams, in our folders today.
Report cards will come home Wednesday. I’m elated by our growth. Keep it up. The most helpful things you can do each week are use our vocabulary words at home, make sure your child is reading, review our work and offer support, and keep practicing those math facts! Multiplication is around the corner.
We will have our spelling and reading tests this Thursday, October 24. Tornadoes is an interesting selection and applicable to where we live, unfortunately. Remember we use our textbook during the reading test so please don’t worry about memorizing the different aspects of the EF scale.
In math this week, we will learn to add three or more single-digit numbers; telling time to five-minute intervals; identifying a.m. and p.m. as well as the number of minutes in an hour and hours in a day; adding 7 and 8; and conducting a survey. This means we will have learned to add 0-9!!
Thank you to Daryn for bringing her butterfly to school! She watched it from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly! And Becky McPherson taught our class Friday morning. I really appreciate her volunteering her time.
                                                                        Loving and Teaching Yours,
                                                                                 Miss Suzann

October 14, 2019

Dear Family,                                                                                              October 14, 2019
Can you believe the first nine weeks is almost over? Where does time go? I’m very proud of my students and their hard work.
This week in math we will begin adding 5 and 6; ordering three digit numbers; counting quarters; and finding half of a set.
Our reading story is Seasons of Change.  Please pay special attention to the vocabulary.  You’ll see last week’s test in our binders.  We read these totally on our own! We struggled a bit so I added ten points to everyone’s test grade.  (Remember you can look at your child’s grades on STI.) This Friday, I will read the test aloud again for any student wishing me to do so. If you have concerns, let me know.
In science, we are talking about the seasons. Dr. Mehaffey was SO IMPRESSED with our life-cycle posters!!
Dates to remember:
Oct. 14 (tonight): Dine at Willy T’s 4:00 until closing. Mention Lakeside!!
Oct. 15 at 3:00: AR testing ends for the 9-weeks
Oct. 17: Fall Festival 5:00-7:30
Oct. 18: Wear camo
Oct. 22: Picture money due. You may also order on-line. If you’re not ordering, you don’t need to return the proofs. Report cards come home this date.

                                                                        Loving and teaching,
                                                                              Miss Suzann

October 8, 2019

Dear Family,                                                                                                October 8, 2019
I hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend! Maybe you got a jump start on our science projects. Students may bring them in as they finish. The due date is Thursday, October 10.
You will see our cumulative Unit 1 Reading Assessment in our work folders today. I was elated with our grades! Unit 2’s theme is Extreme Weather. I’ve been reading our unit tests aloud. Beginning this week, I want them to read it. I’ll tell them any and all words they don’t know. We will see how it goes. I feel confident they will do fine. And if not, we will regroup. I want my students to be successful.
I have mixed feelings about our how I give our spelling tests. They want to write the words and not bubble in. Let me know your thoughts. This week we will WRITE the words on notebook paper.
In math this week our topics are: collecting data and tallying; adding multiples of 10 using mental computation; estimating the sum of two two-digit numbers; and estimating, measuring, and drawing line segments using centimeters. Continue reviewing adding 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 9.
Please return the fall festival sign up sheet. We need parents to work at our inflatable booth. Our city’s splash pad opens tomorrow. Better late than never. They encountered stumbling block after stumbling block. Last day for AR tests this nine weeks is Tuesday, October 15 at 3:00.
We wear neon this Friday. Let’s GLOW, Chiefs!
            A special thank you to:
·        Hayden for bringing us erasers from Japan. He visited Epcot and thought of us!
·        Becky McPherson (Aunt Bec Bec) for our pink beaded necklaces Friday. We enjoyed our pink iced cookies as we sported our beads!
·        Daryn brought us pink arm bands to wear! We were a sharp crowd when we won the spirit stick!
Teaching and loving yours,
             Miss Suzann

Lif Cycles Science Project

Science Project on Life Cycles
Assigned October 3, due October 10
On a white piece of posterboard, draw the stages of a living thing. You may choose from:
·        Butterfly (eggs, caterpillar, chrysalis, adult butterfly)
·        Frog (eggs, tadpole, grows arms and legs, tail shrinks, adult frog)
·        Chicken (egg, chick grows in egg, baby chick hatches, adult chicken)
·        Ladybug (eggs, larva, pupa, adult ladybug)
·        Butterbean (seed, roots from seed, stem and leaves, flowers and bean pods)
We’ve discussed all of these in class and watched videos on some of them.
All pictures should be drawn by the student (no printed pictures or cutouts from magazines). I am looking for original drawings by my third grader. Markers, colored pencils, crayons, and/or paint are all acceptable.
Label the drawings (not printed out from a computer or label maker).
I would suggest your child plan out where he/she will locate each drawing on the poster using a piece of copy paper or notebook paper. Arrows may be used to show the cycle.
20 points for neatness
20 points for spelling
20 points for accurate information
20 points for effort in drawing
20 points for following directions

This should be completed totally by the student. I am excited to see their work!

September 30, 2019

Dear Family,                                                                                         September 30, 2019
Happy last day of September! Maybe we will get some cooler weather in October.
Thank you all for your support of our Homecoming! We won first place for our class banner!!
In math this week we will talk about a dozen and half-dozen, writing fractions, reading and writing to 1,000, writing money amounts with dollar signs and cent symbols, reading a thermometer and marking it to the nearest two degrees, and addition facts adding 3 and 4.
Our Unit 1, Lesson 6 The White Spider’s Gift is a play! We continue to work on writing complete sentences, nouns, verbs, subject (who or what the sentence is about) and predicate (what the subject is or does).
This Friday we wear pink to school. Pom-Pom Squad, you have a note in your binder from Miss Kelly.
No school Monday, October 7. The faculty will attend professional development in Montgomery. I will send our Home Connection this Friday since we will have a short week.
Another free app you may find interesting… Freerice. The grammar section is particularly good.
            Thank you to:
·        Mayor Tibbs for bringing us hot Cinnabon Delights from Taco Bell this morning. Yum!
·        Miss Michelle, Katelyn’s mom, for birthday cupcakes!

Teaching and Loving Yours,
             Miss Suzann
